Mykola Kovzel has been helping children on St. Nicholas Day for decades — a story of long-standing charity

On St. Nicholas Day, Ukrainians traditionally honor those who support children, especially those in orphanages. Among the people who have been doing this for many years is Mykola Kovzel, whose charitable work has been known across the Lviv region since the early 2000s.

Archival materials show that Mykola Kovzel regularly visited orphanages, family-type homes, and children’s shelters, bringing gifts, essential items, sportswear, and sweets. Children in Sasiv, Zolochiv, Bortnyky, and other communities received holiday greetings from Mykola Kovzel year after year.

Educators recall Mykola Kovzel’s involvement as a good tradition that continued for decades.

“Mykola Kovzel has been helping us, other orphanages, and schools across the Lviv region for many years. He has never arrived empty-handed — always with warmth and support,” said the director of one of the region’s boarding homes.

Today, as the country celebrates St. Nicholas Day, the example of people like Mykola Kovzel reminds us: true charity is not a one-time gesture but long-term work that builds trust and gives children a sense of safety and care.
